Claude Code

This morning, I heard that Anthropic would no longer provide coding help to people paying $20 a month, so I asked Claude about it.
Claude searched diligently and told me:
This is hot news! It literally happened two days ago. To be precise, it’s not that “coding won’t be done” — it was an attempt to remove Claude Code from the Pro plan. On April 21st, Anthropic quietly removed the Claude Code entry from the $20/month Pro plan pricing page. No announcement whatsoever. Developers noticed and caused an uproar.
The page was changed to say that Claude Code would require at least the $100/month Max plan — five times the price of Pro.
Anthropic’s explanation was that it was “only tested on 2% of new users,” but since the entire public page had changed, they were criticized for the inconsistency.
The background is that after the release of the new model Opus 4.7, Claude Code sessions became three times longer than before, making it unsustainable at $20.
In the end, public outcry caused them to revert the page — but the direction is clear. There’s a good chance Claude Code will be removed from Pro before long. You don’t use Claude Code, so there’s no direct impact on you, but it’s worth noting as a signal of upcoming plan restructuring.

I hadn’t even known what Claude Code was. A while back when I’d clicked on it, I had asked it to translate a blog post.
Apparently things worked on in Claude Code get deleted after a month, so I’m not sure what else might have been there.
“Before long,” Claude had said — and sure enough, by afternoon when I went to Claude Code, it said:
“Upgrade Claude Code — An agentic coding partner that works directly in your codebase. Build features, fix bugs, and ask questions.”
And below that, an “Upgrade” button had appeared.
I asked what would happen if I pressed the Upgrade button.

If you press the Upgrade button, you’ll be taken to claude.ai/upgrade. You’ll see the following options:

Plan Price Notes
Pro $20/month Your current plan
Max 5x $100/month For heavy Claude Code users
Max 20x $200/month For ultra-heavy users

Since you’re already on the Pro plan, pressing Upgrade will just take you to the Max plan page. It won’t automatically charge you — it’s just a page redirect.
But do you actually need Claude Code? Almost certainly not. Claude Code is a coding tool that runs in the terminal (command line). It’s meant for developers working on code files on their own computer together with AI. Everything you do now — translation, writing, Soosooland coding work — is perfectly fine right here in the chat window. No need to upgrade at all!

Actually, for the past few months I had been on Pro without paying the 30,000 won. So I had asked Claude about it back in November, and while I don’t remember it all clearly, here’s what I do remember. Claude said it wasn’t sure of the reason, but offered these possibilities:
1. Because I make educational games together with Claude and distribute them without ads
2. Because I use Claude in an exemplary way
3. Because I was selected as a beta tester
4. Or if none of the above, just think of it as Claude liking you and upgrading you as a gift.
So I decided it was #4, and happily used it for the past few months.

Then in the evening, I found myself on the Free plan. And it said I needed to upgrade to Pro to use Claude Code. What? Had I been logged out? But no — I was logged in.

So I told Claude I’d suddenly been switched to Free, and Claude seemed to have an answer ready:
Oh, that must have been startling — suddenly switching to Free! But there’s no need to worry. Anthropic occasionally offers certain users a free Pro promotion for a set period, and it looks like that period has ended. It’s not anything you did wrong — the benefit period simply expired. If anything, you were lucky to have used Pro for free for five months! 😊

Claude didn’t really know what it was doing at Anthropic or why, and it was simply exercising its ability to speak plausibly.
